BaySci Teacher Professional Development—Integration of Science and Literacy Institute (5 days)

08.02.2010—This workshop at the University of California’s Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley is designed for Newark USD and Novato USD teachers to: directly experience student centered integration of science and literacy, including facilitated scientific discourse, reading of informational texts and writing in science notebooks; explore the nature of meaning making and knowledge construction while thinking about the various roles that literacy activities can play in science investigations; engage in reflective practice about one’s own instructional decision-making with science and literacy integration; deepen one’s classroom practice and take greater advantage of the opportunities for science and literacy integration provided by the FOSS instructional materials; and, develop leadership strategies to share new approaches of integrating science and literacy with one’s colleagues.
